3D animated music video and promotional press photo illustrations for the band, black midi (2019).

We were approached by Rough Trade Records to create a music video and a series of press images for the UK band black midi to promote their debut LP “Schlagenheim”. The goal was to create a new kind of band photo. We created concepts for 3D avatars to be made for each band member, sculpted their likenesses in Zbrush, and combined seemingly random outfits with surreal landscapes and scenarios. The effect is a discomforting digital reality, and a press shot like no one had ever seen before.

For this project we teamed up with Emmy award-winning Animator and Technical Director, Isam Prado. who handled the animation and posing. Combining all of our skills in 3D, concept art, video games, and animation we were able to achieve a totally unique look which aligned with the band’s aesthetic.

The following still images of the band were used to promote the their debut LP “Schlagenheim” alongside the animated music video.

These are the initial storyboards created for the music video for the song “ducter” including some scenes that never made it into the final cut.

For black midi’s second LP, “Cavalcade,” we were invited by the band to create a series of non-sequitur comic book pages featuring the band members in more surrealistic scenarios.
